“Affordable Housing Milestone: Estrella Landing Apartments Open in New Hanover County”

**Estrella Landing Apartments Open in New Hanover County, Celebrating Affordable Housing**

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Estrella Landing Apartments officially opened its doors in New Hanover County this week after several years in development. State and local officials convened on Tuesday to commemorate the launch of this affordable housing community, which was funded by millions of dollars in subsidies from federal, state, and local sources.

Attendees at the opening included NC Representatives Deb Butler and Michael Lee, New Hanover County Commissioners Rob Zapple, Jonathan Barfield, Chair Bill Rivenbark, Wilmington City Council Member Salette Andrews, and Mayor Bill Saffo. Stephanie Norris, the manager of Terrior—the development firm behind the project—expressed gratitude to the partners who made the community a reality.

“We would not be here without the support and trust of those who believed in our vision,” Norris stated.

Live Oak Bank emerged as the largest private investor in the initiative, contributing $8.4 million to its funding.

Live Oak Attorney Greg Seward highlighted the significance of affordable housing for both the community and the business sector. “We believe that affordable housing is crucial for bolstering the local economy, including job creation, education, and financial growth,” Seward remarked. The demand for these apartments is evident, as more than 400 individuals applied for the 84 available units.

One successful applicant, John Lizzio, expressed his excitement about moving into a place he can afford. “They were going to show me three apartments, but once I saw the first one, I said, ‘I love it; you don’t have to show me the other two,’” Lizzio recalled.

Another resident, Marsha Barfield, is related to New Hanover County Commissioner Jonathan Barfield, who voted to fund the project years ago. “Finding a place I can afford without being broke at the end of the month is truly a blessing,” she said.

Norris emphasized that the focus should remain on the residents: “This is about the people who supported us in this endeavor and said yes, not about Terroir, me, or any other individuals involved.”
