“Spotlight on Cybersecurity: Insights from UNCW’s 6th Annual Cybersecurity Conference”

“WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The 6th annual Cybersecurity Conference at UNC Wilmington (UNCW) kicked off on Wednesday. The conference, the university’s largest one yet, delves into several key aspects of cybersecurity, from safeguarding small and medium-sized businesses to maritime applications of the field. More than 300 individuals are expected to participate.

Ulku Clark, Director of the Center for Cyber Security Education at UNCW, highlighted the timeliness of discussing maritime cybersecurity amidst an ongoing longshoremen strike. She pointed out, “A staggering 90 plus percent of all US trade takes place via maritime routes, with around 35 percent of it occurring on the East Coast”. She continued, “Currently, our port is facing a strike and its economic implications are noticeable. A cyber attack could have a similar impact, hence our choice to concentrate on this topic during the conference.”

The next day of the conference will feature a seminar investigating the potential repercussions of deep-fakes and artificial intelligence in cybersecurity.
