A serious accident involving a logging truck on NC 87 in Riegelwood resulted in a man being impaled by a 3-inch diameter log in his lower left stomach. Despite the severity of the situation, the man remained conscious and communicative as emergency responders from Acme-Delco-Riegelwood Fire-Rescue worked to free him from the wreckage. Transported by air to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, the man received vital blood transfusions en route to the hospital.
Following three extensive surgeries conducted on Wednesday night, the man’s condition has since stabilized, although he remains in the Intensive Care Unit in a serious but stable state.
