“The 46th annual US Open King Mackerel Tournament commenced at Dutchman Creek Park in Southport, marking one of the most prominent events of its kind on the eastern seaboard of the United States. This year boasts an impressive turnout of 568 boats, underscoring the significance of the tournament to the angling community.
US Open Board Chair, Carol Magnani, emphasized the substantial grand prize of $25,000 awaiting participants at this year’s competition. Beyond the competitive aspect, the influx of visiting anglers plays a pivotal role in stimulating the local economy within a community still recuperating from the effects of Potential Tropical Cyclone 8.
Acknowledging the tournament’s economic impact, Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President Karen Sphar attributes its success to the late founding member, John Barbee. His vision in establishing the tournament aimed to attract autumn fishermen and bolster the local business landscape.
As estimated, the tournament reportedly injects a commendable $2 million into the Southport Oak Island communities, benefiting businesses, residents, and particularly the local fishing community. While most king mackerel caught are destined for Canada’s flourishing mackerel industry, Sphar interprets this northbound movement as a positive sign of community progress.
The vibrant participation of fishermen, families, and visitors not only signifies a successful tournament but also reflects a united effort to enjoy and support Southport’s offerings. Sphar expresses enthusiasm for the turnout, highlighting the joy and camaraderie shared through this annual event.”
