LELAND, NC (WWAY) – While golf courses are often associated with business deals, a local organization is making the case that the sport is not just for adults.
Young golfers ranging from ages seven to their teenage years gathered at Magnolia Greens Golf Club on Monday, participating in an engaging program that introduces them to the game. Second grader Parker Corbin expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “This golf program is good.” When asked about his favorite aspects of the First Tee program, he mentioned, “I would say putting and the driving range.”
The First Tee is an eight-week youth program designed to instill values and character development through golf, empowering young participants for a lifetime. “Golf teaches life skills such as honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, curiosity, confidence, respect, and responsibility,” explained program manager Terry Mauney. “Through golf, kids learn how to collaborate, make friends, and set goals.”
Parents are supportive of the initiative. Vince Matthews, whose son Zachary has been involved in the program for a few years, noted, “It is a great program to develop those skills. It provides exercise outdoors and helps children develop interpersonal skills.” He added that he has learned valuable lessons from the program as well.
This opportunity for young golfers to engage with the sport not only benefits them now but may also equip them with lifelong skills. According to Mauney, “We provide free clubs for the kids, scholarship opportunities, and rely on funds raised through our charity to keep our program running.”
