Title: “Community Efforts and Donation Drives: Supporting Western North Carolina’s Recovery from Hurricane Helene”

In response to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina, efforts to aid those impacted are undergoing adjustments to meet evolving needs as temperatures are forecasted to decline later this week. In Southport, two donation drop-off locations are operational from Monday to Wednesday, facilitating contributions to assist affected individuals.

Jeff Moss, the proprietor of College Hunks Moving in Brunswick County, demonstrated generosity by delivering over 7,500 pounds of donations on Sunday to Operation Air Drop and Winkler’s Grove Baptist Church in Hickory. After witnessing the situation firsthand, Moss emphasized the continuous necessity for support in the face of changing weather conditions. As temperatures are expected to decrease, relief coordinators are seeking donations of essential items such as sleeping bags, blankets, coats, gloves, baby formula, baby bottles, and canned food.

Designated trailers are accessible for donation drop-offs at specified times: Monday from noon to 7 p.m., and Tuesday to Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The drop-off locations include the marina in Saint James and “Made New” at Lowes Foods in Southport. Moss has organized to transport the collected items to Hickory Distribution sites on Thursday for distribution among those in need.

For individuals looking to contribute to the storm-impacted communities, additional avenues for donation are available to support recovery efforts. State officials recommend making monetary donations as one of the most effective methods to aid Western North Carolina’s recovery. The North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund, managed by United Way of North Carolina, serves as a centralized platform for monetary contributions towards assisting those affected by the storm, offering a tangible way to provide vital support.
