The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office was recently honored with the Everyday Heroes Award for their exceptional efforts in combating child sexual abuse, as recognized by the Carousel Child Advocacy Center in Bolivia. At the award ceremony held on Wednesday, the center commended every member of the Sheriff’s Office for their dedication to preventing, identifying, and responding to instances of child sexual abuse. With over 150 cases of child abuse reported in Brunswick County last year, the Sheriff’s Office’s commitment to protecting children is crucial.
Detective Sergeant Audrey McRae, who serves in the Special Victims Unit, emphasized the significance of partnering with the Carousel Center to address and prevent child sexual abuse. McRae expressed gratitude for the recognition and highlighted the importance of taking proactive steps in combating this pervasive issue. She noted that the initiative extends beyond their jurisdiction, aiming to make a positive impact on a broader scale.
Since its establishment in 2000, the Carousel Center has played a vital role in training over 6,000 community members across Pender, New Hanover, and Brunswick Counties on recognizing and responding to child sexual abuse. The collaborative efforts between the Sheriff’s Office and the advocacy center underscore their shared commitment to safeguarding children and creating a safer environment for all members of the community.
