“Traffic Gridlock in Southport Following Tropical Cyclone 8: Major Road Closures and Possible Solutions”

**Southport Traffic Comes to a Halt Amid Major Road Closures**

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Traffic in Southport was brought to a halt on Monday evening as the city faced significant road closures due to the aftermath of Potential Tropical Cyclone 8.

The storm, which delivered over a foot of rain last week, caused extensive damage, leading to several roads being closed or collapsed, with NC 211 being particularly affected. This major route into the city is currently unusable.

At present, NC 87 is the sole access point for entering and exiting Southport. Reports have surfaced indicating that some motorists experienced waits of up to three hours before they could even begin moving. On Tuesday, Police Chief Todd Coring convened with state highway patrol representatives to explore potential solutions to the traffic crisis.

“We’re asking for patience from the community and understanding that if your usual commute took 20 minutes, it might take you an hour at this time until we can restore traffic flow on NC 211 and some of our feeder roads,” Coring remarked.

To manage the situation, Coring stated that officers will be redirecting traffic from NC 87 onto Long Beach Road as necessary, until conditions start to improve.
